If you watch any kind of show that deals with style, hair especially, then you will know that there are many types of hair brushes - and they all seem to be used for different things. Use a round brush for volume, a v-shaped brush for smooth, sleek styles, a wire brush to backcomb – for that just-dragged-through-a-hedge look that seems to be so popular. No idea why.
The right kind of hairbrush is important, if only to prevent you ripping your hair out when it gets tangled up in the bristles. Paddle brushes are very good all rounders – kind of a jack-of-all-trades that can be used for most styles and will make sure you don’t have too many accidents.
A paddle brush has a large surface, usually square although there are round versions too. Paddle brushes are very good for de-tangling your hair when you get out of the shower. Due to the large surface, they won’t tug too much and rip the roots – good for finicky children. And because you can work with larger sections, you will cut down on the time it takes to dry your hair – always a good thing. This type of brush has the added bonus of letting you create styles with no static – the flyaway look isn’t really good on most people.
If you have a smooth, classy and sleek style, the paddle brush is definitely the one for you. Use when blow drying for a glossy finish, but if you want lots of volume this isn’t the best type.
Paddle hair brushes are available in many materials, from plastic to bamboo although there doesn’t seem to be any difference in effect. Go for a good quality brush that will last, even if you have to pay a little extra – it’s worth not having to replace a cheaper one every month.
