ATTRACTIVENESS AND HAIRSTYLE

Throughout history, men and women alike have associated long flowing hair as being the acceptable hairstyle when questioned regarding the preference of long or short hairstyles. Hairstyle has played a role in the sexuality and attractiveness of men to women for decades.

In early centuries, women were thought to be attractive if their foreheads were high. For that reason, countless Elizabethan women spent painful hours plucking hairs from their heads in hopes of attracting a man. Amazingly enough, even Queen Elizabeth shared in the vain concept that hairstyle was of the most importance. Historians say she had over eighty red wigs, ensuring no “bad hair days” for this queen.

One of the most popular movements of the twenties involved hairstyle. Women of the twenties felt their existence was second to men, when World War I rolled around, women found them selves alone and having to work outside the home. Never before had women experienced such emotion regarding anything that didn’t center on a man or her family. This in turn opened the door for the women’s movement. Women were seeking freedom, one of the first things women did to signify this new found independence was take out the scissors and cut away their hair, a hairstyle known as the “bob” erupted. The feminist movement was born and so was one of the most classic hairstyles in history.

Following World War II, women were once again thrown into domestication. Hence the “baby-boom” age. The “June Cleaver” era brought to you by the male dominated television world. Hairstyle for women during this time consisted of longer and more feminine looking hair, often pulled up off the face and neck for convenience.

As the pages of time turned, so did the popular hairstyle that dominated the late sixties and seventies. Both men and women alike found themselves opting for the natural look. These years were paralleled with freedom marches and nonconformist lifestyles. Hairstyle reflected the carefree and less inhibited times of this generation.

Fortunately, the turn of the century has brought about the idea that both long and short hair is attractive. And for those men that still feel long flowing hair is the preferred look of the two; most modern women could care less about their opinions, anyway.
